1-Ben trecena daily digest, begins 30 Aug 2017

1-Ben: Can we fix it?

This trecena’s theme is the mysterious sun-sign known as Ben in Yucatec and Aj in K’iche. Well, “mysterious” should be taken with a caveat. I mostly refer to “mysterious to us left-hemisphere dwellers”. I’m sure the complete sense of “Ben” is crystal clear in Momostenango. Well, maybe not immediately upon touchdown, but after a week or two there.

Ben (or “Reed”) is not as readily accessible to everyone as, say the serpent or eagle or any other animal sun-sign. I can relate to the essence of Ix by thinking of any kind of cat. But how can I relate with a reed or corn-stalk? Flora is alien to (western) human experience when compared to fauna. So I had to get some anchors.

I found three keywords which helped me in putting together a possible meaning. They are: Leadership, Family, and Destiny.

Carlos Barrios adds “authority, the home, do everything as we like… creating possibilities… Aj is our internal alter”, among with many other depictions.

No less than 8 US presidents were born on this trecena. More leaders in many other fields are born on a Ben day,  mostly in trecenas other than 1-Ben.

8 out of 44 means 18.1818…%. There are 20 sun-signs, so there’s an expected mean distribution of 5%. Big difference between 5 and 18+ per cent.

If I add the leaders that were born on a Ben day I get 2 more US presidents, a French PM, a Syrian one, 2 Israeli PMs, a Queen mother, the godfather of an elite Banking family, and Julian Assange.

Sounds familiar?

Our concept of time

When does a new child begin life’s journey? Is it at the moment of birth? of conception? Is it after puberty? or a couple of days after his/her parents first met?

When viewing time as a linear progression of units, it becomes terribly important to agree on a suitable answer to the above query. So most people will say that the moment of birth is the beginning, and the government bureau-cats will have a piece of flimsy reality with which to fill out their forms in hospitals, and file them next to the morgue expiry forms.

To counter the linear perception of time, Ken Johnson stresses that according to the Mayan concept of time there’s no exact moment (for example, 00:00) when one day nawal is replaced by the following one. When the sun sets the nawal of the following day already begins to assert its energy, while the nawal that governed the current day wanes.

So like everything else in nature, days and nights have their unique, flowing dance of energies, which intensifies whenever they mix and switch governance (of day and night/winter and summer). Spring, after all, is known as “The Quickening”, and fall is exactly what it means – a slowing down, a time to stop and take stock, gather gravity in preparation for winter – the standstill.

There are no clear cuts in the natural world. Clear cuts can only be found in the human world of words and dotted lines. They are arbitrarily set by my dualistic, calculating mind (one of my favorite tools!)

According to the Mayan concept of time, when the child is born other members of the family are born with him/her. This means that the mother and father (roles) are born with the child, along with sisters, brothers, grandparents, etc. This is most obvious with the first child (there were no parents before it came), but is also true about any other child joining earth.

At the time of birth something also dies. When a couple gets married the bachelors die, and when the pet is adopted the loner dies.

1-Ben: Leadership and the Family

Born on this day: Stephen Baxter, Brian O’Leary, Sean Bean, John Rhys-Davies, Richard E. Byrd, Michael Moore, Ralph Waldo Emerson

Leadership and the Family

1-Ben: The Stone of Destiny

Leadership, since it is the sun-sign that follows The Road (Eb, human sun-sign), in the sense that after the road is mapped a leader must walk in front of the community.

Leadership, also, since the staff or Reed is a sign of authority (much like the Olympian torch, and Roman fasces). It is the tool in the hands of the guide, or the elder. It is the staff of Moses, which can turn into a serpent (13-Chicchan) when the need arises.

A good leader instructs and bridges differences by giving the kind of advice that can run goosebumps up and down my spine. Regretfully, nowadays I seldom experience this when confronted with those who call themselves our leaders. It’s mostly PR and appearances, distractions and guilt-flinging.

This doesn’t mean I’m not blessed with good leaders in my inner circle. Listening to my mother can sometimes cause me goosebumps. Although she wasn’t born on a Ben day or trecena, and doesn’t have Ben in her Mayan cross – her seniority has bestowed upon her the energy of Ben.

(She was born 9-Eb, BTW, the day before 10-Ben)

2-Ix: Lunar Shaman

Born on this day: Shakira, Cliff Richard, Mike Rutherford (Genesis), Harvey Keitel, Carlos Slim, Richard Nixon (37th US President), Mitt Romney

Lunar Shaman

“The spiraling pace of change allows us to contemplate, within our own lifetime, advances that once would have taken centuries.” – Richard Nixon (2-Ix) on his first inaugural address 1969

The way I see it, the number 2 is associated with the moon and the lunar cycles. First of all, the moon comes second to the Sun. Secondly, it receives its light from the Sun, so it’s a reflective device (like your computer screen).

Thirdly… well, maybe anything beyond 2 is already something other than lunar.

Manly P. Hall (3-Cauac, 1-Caban trecena) once said in one of his lectures: “Pressure can cause an individual to say ‘the end justify the means.’ The moment he has done so – the madness of the moon is upon him.” In other words, he’s a lunatic.

So the moon is reflective, and it wields dominion over the jaguar’s time of prowl. It is little surprise, then, that one of the richest men alive (Carlos Slim) was born 2-Ix, and so did “Tricky” Dick Nixon.

2-Ix comes right after the seed of leadership and dreams which is 1-Ben. It can be thought of as a very shrewd and respectful feline; prone to flattery and high-life, perhaps.

3-Men: Omni-Vision

Born on this day: Matt Stone, Michael Stipe, Peter Lorre

“You’ve got it all, you’ve got it sized. Like a Friday fashion show teenager cruising in the corner, trying to look like you don’t try…” – Michael Stipe (3-Men) from Imitation of Life

The second keyword is “Family”, and here I’ll make a small aside for some background (Under the hood).

The sun-sign Ben is one quarter of a burner quadruplet which also includes Edznab, Akbal, and Lamat. Each quadruplet has a theme which binds its four members together. The quadruplet in question has to do with Dreams, Reality, and whatever’s in-between. Why? well, there’s the Night (Akbal) and the Star (Lamat), the mirror (Edznab) and driving it all – destiny’s conduit a.k.a. Jacob’s Ladder (Ben).

The family is where I find myself when the Night falls and the Stars come out. Under the same roof, the family takes the Night’s journey of dreams, where the Reed and the Mirror are predominant. I have dinner with my wife and talk about what came to pass and what’s looming ahead. We discuss our dreams and our daily reality. We take part in working out the minute aspects of each other’s destiny.

To clarify, “Family” is anything YOU decide it is, with or without blood, and regardless of gender or any other denomination. Oddly enough, Ken Johnson says Ben’s “Family” orientation also means household pets and animals.

Family means something very, very specific in human experience. This is where 3-Men comes in. The true engine (Activating 3) behind leadership is vision without boundaries. It is the vision and undying drive which is worth sweating out all the small details of daily life.

4-Cib: Four Mothers

Born on this day: Kenny Kirkland, Lisa Lopez, Brian Austin Green, Hal Holbrook, Ali Akbar Khan

Temple of the NEW and S

4-Cib is the community center/shrine which completes the familial cycle

The infrastructure below the current 1-Ben process is finalized today. Beginning tomorrow constructive focus begins to shape reality, based on these roots. It is of little wonder the number 4 embodies completeness and definition.

The question arising today is: What do I define as being sacred to me?

To further define the question, keep the word “Family” in mind while pondering. The family was always considered sacred in all communities. It is my home and its sanctity. It is the wisdom I bestow to my dependents and offspring.

4-Aj’ maj today resonates with 1-Aj on a sound level. It shares the same prefix “Aj” which Barbara related to “Sri” in the Vedic context.

In Hebrew, “Aj”/”Ach” means brother. You know, like Freemasons and G.I.s call each other…

Gone-too-soon brother

Kenny Kirkland (4-Cib) was a talented and successful jazz pianist who passed away 16 years ago at the premature age of 43. In the next clip he plays one of the best piano solos I’ve heard (begins 04:28).

5-Caban: Global Center of Gravity

Born on this day: Byron Katie, Fernando Torres, Robert Smith (The Cure), Demi Moore, Michael J. Fox, Nikos Kazantzakis, Michael Collins

Global Center of Gravity

“Jimi Hendrix changed my life. Each generation influences the following one and as a consequence brings it back to the past.” – Robert Smith (5-Caban) venerating Hendrix (9-Lamat, previous trecena)

The day after wisdom is firmly defined (4-Cib) it’s time to blaze new tracks using the global mind/heartbeat Caban.

5-Caban’s slogan might be:

“You live, you learn” – Alanis Morrisette (13-Caban)

As long as I’m breathing, eating, sleeping, communicating, expressing myself – I’m learning.

And where is the place I go to “do everything as [I] like”, as Carlos Barrios puts it? I go back to Mother earth. I go back home to get my heart synchronized with whoever I hug there. I can be myself and put some focus on the destiny I share with those under my roof.

We all learn from each other all the time.

If I have to go global and specify where can that homey place be on Google Maps, I’ll say this place is wherever I travel with my family on the home planet. This can be many places, even the ones I travel to alone to meditate and remember my family.

This is why I’m into house-swapping.

6-Edznab: Tradition is Real

Born on this day: Kimberley Ann Deal (Pixies), Zachary Taylor (12th US President), James A. Garfield (20th, same) , Benicio del Toro, Lisa Kudrow, Nicolas Godin (Air), Jim Abrahams

“The chief duty of government is to keep the peace and stand out of the sunshine of the people.” – James A. Garfield (6-Edznab)

Yesterday was 5-Caban, and since Caban relates to a global heartbeat and to the planet itself, it’s a good time to focus on the universal.

Whatever I find sacred in my personal life has a global counterpart – some kind of “value” which is observed in any and all communities and families around the globe.

When pondering my own personal values I realized I cannot use “family” as a word for value, but rather rephrase to a value within what I call family. Something like giving respect to elders and leaders, giving due attention to children, or thinking about stocking the fridge and pantry (maintenance of abundance in the home).

Edznab [Tijax] is a mirror or reality and truth. I look at a polished mirror and nothing remains concealed. Today’s energy can reveal those places where reality contradicts attitudes and perceptions.

For example, I can go along with my day thinking I look dreadful just because I feel so. When I go to the bathroom I know for sure whether I’m right/wrong about this perception. Looking in the mirror has that quality of changing (and even destroying) whatever misconception came before it.

When coupled with the number 6, Edznab becomes a reliable reflector. It demands the kind of truth that can be appreciated anywhere.

dead presidents’ Wisdom

We’ll go over two of the names above, and begin with the one who is currently least known. Zachary Taylor came from the Whigs party of the mid-19th century. The Whigs basically supported the supremacy of Congress over the presidency and favored a program of modernization and economic protectionism.

Economic Protectionism, by the way, is called Anti-Globalization

James Garfied, called a Republican in the parlance of the times, was the 20th man in the white house. He got to call the shots for a mere 6 months, right up to the point where he got his two .44 mm shots by a ‘deranged assassin’. That happened on the Tzolkin day 8-Ahau (2 days following his birthday).

James Garfield was the second US president to be assassinated (after
Zachary Tylor was the second US president to die in office.

7-Cauac: Cloudy Horizon

Born on this day: James Buchanan (15th US president), Jerry Seinfeld, Kurt Cobain, Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim), Robert Altman, Mario Savio

Cloudy Horizon

“With the lights out, it’s less dangerous. Here we are now, entertain us! I feel stupid and contagious. Here we are now, entertain us! A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido.” – Kurt Cobain (7-Cauac)

Cauac (Rainstorm) shares traits with the current trecena theme of Ben. It appears on the North/feminine Mayan cross of Aj/Ben. Cauac is considered to be a homey sign, and people born under this sign tend to appreciate the comforts of home and family. This is the flip-side of the stormy nature of Cauac, who knows how stormy it can be outside the family and home settings.

In addition, Cauac, much like Ix on stage 2 and Kan on stage 12 of this trecena – embodies potential and a gathering of energy before release. It is therefore fitting for Cauac to appear on the 7th stage of this trecena, since it is on this day that Destiny reaches its highest potential and gains purpose, as a cleansing and educating force within HOME.

Another aspect of Cauac is a special gift for teaching and learning. This goes well with the description of 5-Caban and “you live, you learn”.

8-Ahau: Infinite Light

Born on this day: Alan Dershowitz, Warren Beatty, Toni Collette, Vincent van Gogh, Douglas Adams, Norah Jones

Infinite Light

“If the Universe came to an end every time there was some uncertainty about what had happened in it, it would never have got beyond the first picosecond. And many of course don’t.” – Douglas Adams (8-Ahau) from Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (1987)

Destiny. A word with much gravity and a touch of romanticism. Is there really a destination that I can single out and abbreviate as being my destiny? The thing with destinations is that once you arrive at one of them you get a view good enough to recognize the next one. So how can there be a destiny in the sense of an ultimate destination, some life-long goal that can be actually realized and materialized? And if there is one, in what way do I continue living without destiny beyond its achievment?

There can’t be such a thing as a future destiny, unless I define death itself as a destiny, followed by nothing. Instead of looking to the future in search of it, I think destiny is everything that has already happened, along with whatever’s transpiring now. So in other words destiny is made up of my karmic accumulation of the past, over which I have no control, and the now moment, for which I have total responsibility.

… and 8-Ahau says: “perfection cannot be realized tomorrow, nor remembered as past glory. It abides now and always, beckoning me to discover it.”

9-Imix: Begin from Zoom-Out

Born on this day: Robert Plant, Johann Sebastian Bach, Aretha Franklin, John Noble, Richard O’Brien, Glenn Close, Ron Silver

Begin from Zoom-Out

“With a bit of a mind-flip you’re into the Time slip. And nothing can ever be the same. You’re spaced-out on sensation, like you’re under sedation” – Richard O’Brien (9-Imix) Rocky Horror Show

The 4th uinal begins today with 9-Imix. The 9th stage, when all cycles of action come to completion, gets a primordial jolt back to the basic aspect of nurturing and initiation (Imix).

So far I’ve been outlining the elusive meaning of the sun-sign Ben using the keywords: leadership, family, and destiny. 9-Imix is the day when these concepts coalesce and integrate to complete the cycles of action, a split second before manifestation (stage 10).

Leadership, since Imix is the first day sign of the uinal, and it contains all the raw materials required to journey through 20 days and arrive at Ahau.

However, being the first and the most raw is just a good start, and this is where family comes in. A good parent is a good leader, and vice versa. Another angle shows that a good leader is usually also good at being led, and the same applies for parents being good children.

“But what does ‘good’ mean?” asked a trendy post-modernist at the back.

Whatever’s best in line with my destiny.

Imix is the cosmic female parent, who lies at the very root of family. She nourishes and protects her offspring emphatically. She follows obediently and leads impartially. Her destiny is strong and radiant.

The pelvic thrust

Riff Raff (9-Imix), Magenta (11-Cib), Columbia (5-Men), Brad (10-Lamat), Janet (12-Men), and the occasional narrator (8-Kan) warping time:

10-Ik: Palpable Change

Born on this day: Lou Piniella, Tom Selleck, Richard Dean Anderson, James Hetfield (Metallica), Egberto Gismonti, Boy George, Billie Joe Armstrong, Beth Gibbons, L. Ron Hubbard, George Lucas, Christopher Cousins (Breaking Bad)

Palpable Change

“The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them.” – Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (10-Ik)

What began in the stalk of the Reed manifests today on the breath of the boundless Wind. The ideals and morals that established Leadership and Family during the first stages, the same ones that make the Reed rigid (the proverbial Backbone) all get blown away and diluted today by the complications of language and meaning.

This is what Mr. Hubbard was talking about when he uttered the above quote, at least the way I see it.

The wind bends the flexible Reeds and breaks the rest.

11-Akbal: Commander-in-Chief

Born on this day: Pelé, Danny Kaye, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi, Jay Kay (Jamiroquai), Kai Eckhardt, Jack London, Henry James, Chester A. Arthur (21st US president), Herbert Hoover (31st US president), Abraham Lincoln (16th US president), Andy Serkis, Oliver Platt, Crispin Glover (George McFly), Kevin Costner, Vinnie Jones

“I am your density.” – George McFly (11-Akbal) to the Future Lorraine McFly (9-Lamat)

To have 3 US presidents born on one day, and to have so many of them on the same trecena (wait, there’s more to come) – is a very curious finding, to say the least.

However, it is merely a finding. Everything else that is currently spiraling around my mind is speculation and theory, extracted through everyday discourse and elusive fashions.

11-Akbal is to creatively step into the unknown. Instead of speculations and maybes and starting from scratch, it stands for consistency and structure that arises from whatever’s already manifested.

12-Kan: Deep Harvest

Born on this day: Pope Benedict XVI (265th Pope), Nomar Garciaparra, Charles Mingus, James Doohan, Pia Zadora, Werner von Siemens, Omar Bradley

“Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple.” – Charlie Mingus (12-Kan)

The next-to-last stage 12 is like the next-to-final scene of a good suspense movie. It is when all the pieces fall into place, and all loose ends are somehow tied or otherwise dealt with. It concludes when it’s obvious that the only thing left in the movie is to watch some kind of final goodbye, with a hint regarding what happens next.

The moment of understanding for the Reed, that instant when everything falls into place – is when it produces a Seed. The Seed is tomorrow’s potential. It is the offspring that allows the leader of Destiny to depart, knowing that even if his own destiny hasn’t been completely realized within his Time, the seeds of a new destiny have already been sown.

Kan is a sign of gathering potential that has no time boundaries. Something like indefinite storage. After all, a seed can remain buried in the desert for many years, awaiting the ever-possible flood from the old mountains.

13-Chicchan: Winter’s Terror

Born on this day: Heath Ledger, Sylvester Stallone, Jodie Foster, Mark Wahlberg, George W. Bush (43rd US president), Osama bin Laden

Winter's Terror

“I cannot believe in God when there is no scientific evidence for the existence of a supreme being and creator.” – Jodie Foster (13-Chicchan) As quoted in the Calgary Sun (2007), and sounding a lot like Dr. Eleanor Arroway

The United States declared independence on the Tzolkin date 9-Ben (1-Chicchan trecena). So, today these two related sun-signs (Serpent and Reed) meet again, but in reverse.

To find that Bush and Bin-Laden shared the same Tzolkin birthday really got my attention a few years ago. Bush is the 8th US president to have his birthday on this trecena. I wonder if this record will be beaten. His father, BTW, Bush senior, was born the very next day in the Tzolkin – 1-Cimi. In other words – close, but no cigar.

The sun-sign Ben seems to have a lot in common with the United States. Heck, even Obama was born on 9-Ben!

… and what’s this hang-up I have with presidents and politicians, anyway? Time to get off the authority trip. Time for a change.

So the last day of the Tzolkin Fall is 13-Chicchan, which is a divine flavor of fluidity, with an unreal scent for drama – directly contrasting our point of origin (1-Ben, the unitary steel pipe).

… and Moses remained on mount Nebo, and watched his flock cross the Jordan into the promised land.

1-Ik trecena daily digest: begins 28 December 2015

everyday reincarnation

Yesterday an act of violence, rooted in ignorance and bigotry, took place somewhere, and cut short an innocent life that was full of promise, now expired. It was sudden curtains on a beautifully casted role of a young martyr. His fiance’s grief-stricken face was on all the front pages, next to a photo of his smiling face. Over the course of 48 hours following the tragedy, a large host of readers and viewers synchronized in an invisible wave of empathy that rippled through wireless existences.

The assailant was whisked away into the safe hands of secret government branches. The radical group by whose name he allegedly operated was shown again to be vicious and inhuman – the obvious enemy, deserving all available resources and fears. The large host of readers and viewers was unknowingly coerced into pidgen-holing and picking sides. So the host broke up into smaller, disempowered, and confused groups.

Somehow, life goes on, and the wind keeps blowing.

Spirit dwells within bodies and without them. When I am conscious of spirit it is near me, guiding my thoughts and actions, interfacing with this world through me. When I am not conscious of it, spirit still guides me, near though not within my attention.

In one of his allusions to esoteric knowledge, Shakespeare once called sleep “the small death”. So what comes after the smaller death?

06:20 (birth) blank awareness, oblivion

06:22 (baby) get out of bed, get into shower

07:00 (child) eat breakfast, think about today

09:30 (young adult) work/study/DO

12:30 (adult) have lunch, reflect and plan

22:30 (near death) drowsy reading in bed

So every day is a mini-cycle of life and death, and my tenure on planet earth is a longer cycle, with a similar arc of composing and decomposing. In other words, remembering someone from yesterday on the daily cycle is like remembering someone from a previous life on the longer cycle.

But wait a minute. What about innocent civilians getting blown up daily in famous cities? They didn’t get a chance to grow old and depart surrounded by their loved ones. They left a gaping vacuum behind them, a trail of tears and despair.

The effects of the tragedy reverberate long after a young life is cut short. The absence becomes stronger than the presence. But it is only through comparison that a life can be defined as being lived in full or cut too short. It is defined as a tragedy by the ones left behind who have to deal with the aching absence of their loved one, those that imagine what could have been if…

Car accidents, epidemics, hunger, allergies, and other manifestations of Kali (the dark and mysterious goddess of death in the Hindu narrative) all take their part in cutting short beautiful and promising lives. Should I draw comparisons between political terrorism and crashing a car under the influence? Like Alan Watts used to say, is there a clear line between what I do and what happens to me?

If you ask the bereaved, there would be no difference between one cause and the other. No honor in one death and shame in the other. The reality of the bereaved is living daily with the void left behind by a loving spirit.

If comparison is put aside, life cannot be cut short too soon or too late. On many levels life is continuous so it cannot be cut at all, long nor short. Birth happens right on time, why shouldn’t death happen in the same way?

From the individual’s perspective, the show goes on till the actor leaves for good. The other actors, who cared and loved the departed, remain on stage and begin the next act without him. They change the plot in light of his death.

There’s a hope for justice. A staving off of revenge.

Somehow, the show goes on, and the curtains move by an unseen draft.

1-Ik: Mercury, The Pyramid of Giza, School Diplomas – No Swamp in sight

Note: this post is one of the few I haven’t written about in full yet. 1-Muluc is another, and 1-Ix is yet another. Ik is definitely one of the sun-signs I’ve never managed to pin down like I did for most sun-signs. I’m therefore publishing a partial post, hoping to fill up the gaps soon. In the meantime, I’ve listed the celebrities, quotes, and sequence of day glyphs for the 1-Ik trecena.

One voice

Born on this day: Pink, Sade, Robert Johnson, Mick Jones (The Clash), Otto von Bismarck, Scott Bakula, Lesley Stahl

One voice

“A conquering army on the border will not be stopped by eloquence.” – Otto von Bismarck (1-Ik)

I like good quotes, which is why I keep copying them into my posts. A good quote puts into words good ideas and points to wise and deep courses of thought. The day of good communications is known as Ik, the sign of the wind and spirit (among other meanings).

In the glyph, the horizontal line represents the wind, and the perpendicular line is a tree. Trees and winds are intimately related in the Mayan culture, and might even be considered to be one organism. The wind carries seeds across great distances, and they fall to become new trees at new locations.

In the same way, good ideas are like seeds that fertilize new lands when they are communicated (like a quote).

A good idea moves mountains and meets deadlines with great gusto. It’s a glimpse of what a better reality could look like, which sets wheels in motion.

Good communications is key in any community, be it a community of brain cells (as in good thinking) or a beehive (good honey) or a Kibbutz (good parties).

Dual intuition

Born on this day: Chris Lowe, Joe Strummer, Agatha Christie, Joseph Campbell, Alan Bates, Víctor Martínez

Dual Intuition

“The difficulty of beginning will be nothing to the difficulty of knowing how to stop.” – taken from Murder in Mesopotamia by Agatha Christie (2-Akbal)

The sun-sign Ik (wind, breath) is involved with knowledge and communication. In western terms, I might refer to this as the quest for truth, along with the effort to faithfully disseminate it.

Today’s sign, Akbal (night, house) has a flavor of the unknown and veiled aspects of experience and knowledge. To navigate the unknown a good measure of courage is required, and flexibility to adapt to new circumstances as the unknown is revealed.

Together, 2-Akbal is a question of courage, flexibility, and resolve. These are the essential tools of any truth seeker. Courage to follow truth wherever it might lead; flexibility to stay on course and consider alternatives fairly; and resolve to reach the other side of the adventure and lesson.

Natural rhythm

Born on this day: Marilyn Manson, Queen Elizabeth II, Steven M. Greer, Joseph Goebbels, Arthur Conan Doyle, Paul Melnyk (Saints of British Rock), Brian Eno

Natural Rhythm

“Is adult entertainment killing our children? Or is killing our children entertaining adults?” – Marilyn Manson (3-Kan)

3-Kan represents fertile seeds that the wind (1-Ik) carries to distant locations. The seeds travel in all directions. There are so many of them, so it doesn’t really matter where they end up, or whether they strike root or not. When distribution is carried out by the wind in all directions, some seeds are bound to become successfully in becoming new plants.

Other seeds may lay dormant for years until their opportunity comes along. Time means little to good, fertile potential.

Foundation of life

Born on this day: Huey Lewis, Ken Wilber, Adam Smith, Sean Austin, Tom Sizemore, Angelina Jolie, Wil Wheaton, Andrew Carnegie

"The power of love is a curious thing" - Huey Lewis (4-Chicchan)

“The power of love is a curious thing” – Huey Lewis (4-Chicchan)

The fourth day of the trecena is when the first cycle around the four cardinal direction concludes. It began in the north (Ik), then west (Akbal), then south (Kan), and today – east (Chicchan). Tomorrow it’ll be north again (Cimi). A trecena consists of 3 such cycles of 4 days (=12) plus one more day to evolve (13).

So, as Ken Johnson often writes, a 4 day is a completion and perfection in itself. Even though there are still 9 more days to the 1-Ik trecena, 4-Chicchan represents a perfect set of requirements and limitations upon which the entire process depends.

What are the requirements and limitations of Chicchan (serpent)?

Chnage power

Born on this day: Joe Torre, Charlie Chaplin, Erica Badu, Simon Cowell, Monica Bellucci

"I don't want to create a revolution — I just want to create a few more films." - Charlie Chaplin (5-Cimi)

“I don’t want to create a revolution — I just want to create a few more films.” – Charlie Chaplin (5-Cimi)

Traditional shamanism

Born on this day: Brent Spinner, Mother Teresa, Jackson Pollock, Steven Bauer

"Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand. Anyone may gather it and no limit is set." - Mother Teresa (6-Manik)

“Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand. Anyone may gather it and no limit is set.” – Mother Teresa (6-Manik)

Purpose = Plenty

Born on this day: John Forbes Nash, Carl Sagan, Benjamin Netanyahu, Grace Jones

"What are the stars? Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars." - Carl Sagan (7-Lamat), Cosmos (1980)

“What are the stars? Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars.” – Carl Sagan (7-Lamat), Cosmos (1980)

Waters above, waters below

Born on this day: Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Joan Rivers, Salomon Mayer von Rothschild, Che Guevara, Thelonious Monk, Clive Owen, Eugene Levy, Frank Ribéry, Carles Puyol, Wilt Chamberlain

"The life of a single human being is worth a million times more than all the property of the richest man on earth." - Che Guevara (8-Muluc), On Revolutionary Medicine (1960)

“The life of a single human being is worth a million times more than all the property of the richest man on earth.” – Che Guevara (8-Muluc), On Revolutionary Medicine (1960)

Intensely canine

Born on this day: Mark Twain, Charles Bukowski, Stephen Biko, Adolf Hitler, Catherine Ashton, Eugene V. Debs, Paris Hilton, Laurence Wachowski, Stephen Spielberg, Steve Carell, Ernest Borgnine

1-Cimi trecena daily digest: begins 25 July 2015

“A giant heart-shaped pattern is shown on the surface of Pluto, as seen from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft.” Photograph By AP

“Pluto is the planet of major transformation, representing the cycle of death and rebirth. It is responsible for breaking down the old to make room for the new. Pluto can also represent power and control, and reigns over our relationship to authority figures and leadership.” – (source)

Earlier this month of July, a NASA probe passed by the dwarf planet Pluto living on the outskirts of our home star neighborhood. Why is it a dwarf? Does it matter if the scientific community decides that Pluto is a dwarf planet instead of just a planet? Does it make the above quote irrelevant? Of course not. What does science have to do with tarot and astrology? One’s set of assertions is arranged upon a chronology different to the other’s.

From the left hemisphere’s point of view, it is important to distinguish between a proper planet and an anomalous planet. The rouge planet should be named differently to keep the original “planet” category valid, well-defined, and respectable. From the right hemisphere there is no such difference, since there is one solar system, and the physical movement of the bodies of heaven is only the 10% visible part of a sub-surface iceberg of great unseen influences. So a fashionable new category called “dwarf planets” says more about the ones making the distinction than about the planet Pluto itself.

The big-picture tarot and astrology angle says Pluto “reigns over our relationships to authority figures and leadership”. Does this ring a bell to anyone? It looks just like the recent NASA public relations move (~8-year voyage) mysteriously intersected with our culture’s current struggle with misplaced power and personal empowerment efforts.

“… breaking down… making room” Pluto goes around our home star in extremely long cycles. So a process of deterioration and failure of our institutions and authority figures can take decades to manifest, when it actually took centuries to put them in place.

“The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them.”
– Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (born 10-Ik)

Under the hood

As our home star makes its hot and sweaty northern hemisphere journey, “as hot as July”, the Tzolkin is crossing the gates of Winter.

It is said that in winter, when the light outside gets low the light inside is correspondingly high. “Inside” can be within your home, where the Christmas tree or Hanukkah lamp may be lit-up, it can be within your tribe, where the fire burns longer, and family and friends share both physical and conversational heat. “Inside” also means that when the physical ebbs the spiritual tides; when I can’t play outside in the sun I contemplate together inside, by the fire.

I’ll begin with some fundamental technical concepts. These are important now, because 1-Cimi is when I contemplate the rigors of winter, the period of cerebral challenge, of cutting away fat (by chewing it), of the mental and spiritual aspects of the solar year gift.

Each Tzolkin season lasts 65 days. In Mayan calendrics, the 65-day period is called a burner period. Let’s take the day 5-Men and measure 65 days ahead. We’ll arrive exactly at 5-Ahau. If we count 65 days backwards we’ll get to 5-Oc, and if we count 130 days forwards/backwards we’ll arrive at 5-Chicchan.

Therefore, Chicchan, Oc, Men and Ahau are a burner-set quadruplet.

Since 1-Imix is the beginning of the calendar (and of fall, too), the other 3 combinations belonging to 1-Imix’s burner-set are 1-Cimi, 1-Chuen, and 1-Cib, and they mark the beginning of winter, spring, and summer respectively.

1-Cimi: “For in that sleep of death what dreams may come?” – from Hamlet by Shakespeare (baptized 1-Eb)

1-Cimi: One Death a Day

Born on this day: Ian McKellen, Jane Fonda, Colin Powell, George H. W. Bush (41st US president), Russian submarine Kursk accident, Jim Jeffries, Fred Schneider (B-52’s), Nassim Haramein, Gamal Abdel Nasser

One Death

“The board is set. The pieces are moving.” – Ian McKellen (1-Cimi) as Gandalf in LOTR 3

It seems we still have some presidents to mention on this trecena, after the 7 American ones that were born on the previous trecena. However, in 1-Cimi there are presidents from other nationalities, so look out for them.

2-Manik: First-Aid Kit

Born on this day: Colin Farrell, Elton John, Djimon Hounsou

First-Aid Kit

“You know you can’t hold me forever. I didn’t sign up with you.” – Elton John (2-Manik) singing Bernie Taupin (12-Imix)

3-Lamat: Reckless Rabbit

Born on this day: Chris Isaak, Whitney Houston, Joe Cocker, Hank Azaria

Reckless Rabbit

3-Lamat is a young star that hasn’t been broken-in yet, a crazy diamond

The theme of the current trecena is change and transformation by means of shedding an old skin; a death within life. The sun-sign on stage 3 (Lamat, the Star) directly contrasts the theme of the trecena, since it stands for constant abundance by multiplication of whatever it comes in contact with, rather than any sort of modification.

After the goal of transformation is set on 1-Cimi, and a process of spiritual healing takes place on 2-Manik, Lamat comes along and multiplies the process by contrasting it – from the mind to emotion, from a challenge to interim ripeness and fulfillment.

3-Lamat stands for the drive to work and do and give, without a definite focus on what needs work right now, nor whom to give to.

4-Muluc: Flowing Certainty

Born on this day: Madonna, Ezer Weizman (7th Israeli President), Daniel Pinchbeck (2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl), Karl Dönitz

Flowing certainty

“Absolutely no regrets.” – Madonna (4-Muluc)

5-Oc: Only Love

Born on this day: Bob Marley, Richard Quest

Only Love

“We don’t have education we have inspiration; if I was educated I would be a damn fool.” – Bob Marley (5-Oc)

A holiday afternoon and evening is best to spend with your best friends and loved ones. Play some Reggae. Listen to Marley’s words.

After all, this is the period of change. The Autumn pollution is washed away by the December rains.

6-Chuen: Conservative Weaver

Born on this day: Roger Waters, Igor Stravinsky, Madeleine Stowe, Captain Mission (The Deep Fix), Geoffrey Rush, Taylor Swift

Conservative Weaver

“And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking. Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way, but you’re older. Shorter of breath and one day closer to Death.” – Roger Waters (6-Chuen)

"Maps of space/time are without and within
Consciousness itself is just a Location
13 intentions, 20 aspects, together in grace
YOU become the process in
8-Division Sky Place"
- 8-Division Sky Place by Captain Mission (6-Chuen)

7-Eb: Purposeful Paths

Born on this day: Victoria Beckham, Hu Jintao

Purposeful paths

7-Eb is the path from Death back to Reality

Stage 7 is all about purpose. The purpose of the 1-Cimi process (Death, change) is to find a new way, which is 7-Eb. However, in this process it is obvious that finding a new way happens halfway through the journey, and there’s much more to come down the Road.

Let’s say I get fired from my job on 1-Cimi. That’s it. That job is DEAD. I’ll never do what I used to do, and never be who I used to be.

Naturally, it takes me time to realize what I lost, and go over the things I could have done differently to keep my job. I must first shed my old habits (skin), and get used to a new routine. As time goes by, I reach 7-Eb, when I begin to see the outlines of what lies ahead, and gain a better perspective of what I left behind.

Because the past tends to haunt me like a wolf, I’ll be busy sulking for quite some time. This must come to pass and play out before I can fully realize why I couldn’t possibly stay in that dead-end job, and why getting fired was the best thing that could ever happen to me.

When considering the above example, please note that the Tzolkin is out-of-time. In other words, any realization and understanding regarding the death process of being fired can take any measure of Time. In the Timeless Tzolkin round, the 1-Cimi paradigm of change lasts 13 days minimum. It usually takes much more, and I might find myself spending years of regret and perceived failure, out of work, out of meaning, and out of divine purpose.

This is due to the Error in Time.

8-Ben: Eternal Guide

Born on this day: Michael Dorn (Lieutenant Commander Worf), Aldous Huxley, Jonathan Safran Foer, Nicolas Sarkozy (23rd French President), Nicol Williamson (Merlin in Excalibur), Frank Oz, James Nesbitt, Vincent Pastore

Eternal Guide

“For in spite of language, in spite of intelligence and intuition and sympathy, one can never really communicate anything to anybody.” – Aldous Huxley (8-Ben) in Sermons in Cats

Also from Huxley:

“To see ourselves as others see us is a most salutary gift. Hardly less important is the capacity to see others as they see themselves.”

Ben (Reed, Staff) signifies aspirations and the ability to bring them down to earth and make them real. When Ben appears on stage 8, it reminds me of the lesson of the previous trecena, 1-Ben. It is the balancing factor within the process of change.

In a measured and calm way, 8-Ben helps to come to grips with the way in which change and challenge sculpture Destiny. In order to realize change consciously, Life transforms to such an extent, that it will never be the way it used to be. This happens gradually in some cases, and suddenly in others.

8-Ben is the ever-present and unbreakable/infinitely flexible backbone of life itself, which – especially in the face of death and irreversible change – strives upwards and onwards relentlessly.

9-Ix: Supreme Magician

Born on this day: Jon Stewart, Max Keiser, Carlos Zambrano, Boris Becker, Huey Morgan (Fun Loving Criminals), Ernest Hemingway, Charlton Heston, Chris Cooper (American Beauty), Peter Stormare, Renée Zellweger

Supreme Magician

“There’s no one thing that’s true. It’s all true.” – Ernest Hemingway (9-Ix), For Whom the Bell Tolls Ch. 43

Patience is the hallmark of any seasoned member of the feline family (like the Jaguar in his element, and also the special Ops soldier in his nocturnal ambush). When I have absolute confidence in my skills, patience and the ability to identify the magical moment to pounce become indispensable and arise naturally.

This is the complete Jaguar shaman/wizard, who has the macro-vision required to put disassociated pieces together in order to bring about a manifested vision [10-Men], which is true and very much real.

I’d like to make a slight detour at this point, back to some fundamentals.

Every trecena is missing 7 sun-signs (covers only 13 of all 20). These missing signs affect the Now in the same way that the Invisible Sun of the Spirit affects our subconscious, from the underworld. The missing signs in this trecena are Cauac (storm) through Chicchan (Serpent). These will soon reappear at the onset of the next trecena 1-Cauac, with the latter occupying stage 7, naturally.

Out of these, I’ve decided to focus on 5-Akbal, since 5 and 9 go together within the trecena and without. Here is a beautiful music video I highly recommend playing in full volume. The visuals consist of oil-painting animation. The instrumental soundtrack is by Peter Gabriel (5-Akbal, more on him next time). The animation and the music put together tell the story of human life, death, and rebirth in the chaotic, political world I find myself living in (at times).

10-Men: Vision Manifested

Born on this day: Gillian Anderson, Brittany Murphy, Spike Lee, John Adams (2nd US president), Laurence Olivier, Stephen Graham

Vision Manifested

“The world grows more enlightened. Knowledge is more equally diffused.” – John Adams (10-Men), Discourses on Davila (1790)

The supreme magician 9-Ix evolves and obtains a real vision of what’s to come during the unfolding winter, and whatever’s beyond. When true change is followed through (and even surrendered to completely) from conception to birth, the reward is a crystal clear picture of reality.

Keep in mind that Cimi stands for luck, and Men stands for plenty (material or otherwise) – good combination, huh?

Revisiting the above quote by John Adams – it is evident that plenty is available to me wherever I turn, especially plenty of information. Enlightenment might not be as evidently abundant as data, but this is because data is not Knowledge.

Knowledge is human/organic from beginning to end. This is why we have plenty of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and absolutely no artificial knowledge/wisdom.

Even if I become Dr. Frankenstein and animate some organic tissue I’ll call Eye-Gore I will not be able to engineer and fashion him with a Spirit or a Soul, let alone download some childhood memories using a USB port to feed its emotional chip.

The vision instilled by the sun-sign Men belongs to the spirit of the winds. It is an ancient mode of consciousness that enables both Eagles and Men to see the unseen and even the never seen (and also to procrastinate, but that’s another issue). I’m afraid this aspect of reality cannot be coded into software and compiled successfully.

Maybe with a computer that runs on a 13-bit operating system…

11-Cib: Reborn Antiquity

Born on this day: Henry Winkler (The Fonz), Zack de la Rocha, Tupac Shakur, Emmanuelle Seigner, Anthony Hopkins, Eli Wallach, Patricia Quinn (Rocky Horror Magenta), Calvin Coolidge (30th US president), Bo Jackson, Klaus von Bülow

Reborn Antiquity

“The fifth sun sets get back reclaim. The Spirit of cuahtemoc alive an untamed. Now face the funk now blasting out your speaker, on the one – MAYA, Mexica. That vulture came to try and steal your name but now you found a gun. This is for the people of the SUN.” – Zack de la Rocha (11-Cib), People of the Sun, from the album Evil Empire.

The change that was initiated 1-Cimi and manifested yesterday left some fallout in its wake. The fallout is made up of childhood friends, debilitating habits, detrimental diets, red Marlboros, and everything else that falls under the category of old skin.

Transformation must be destructive. The butterfly taking flight for the first time cares not for the destruction of its cocoon.

However, man is only part butterfly, so the confusion that follows a sudden Death (like getting fired) takes time to sort out. Solace is called for, to smooth over the wrinkles of worry and loss, and on 11-Cib this is gently offered to me by the grace of my forefathers.

They are the only ones that can truly claim that they’ve “been there, done that.”

Solace and comfort are in order at this point of the journey. Some might find it within their community settings, some at church or mosque or synagogue, some in Nature, or by running fingers through the dirt, or through the fur of their pet. These are all CIB.

The need for change is evident in all walks of life, and the lessons offered by this culminating trecena are desperately absent from the current global operating system (32-Bit) and culture. To illustrate one aspect of this absence, I once again offer poetic verse from Rage Against the Machine.

Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal
I walked the corner to the rubble that used to be a library
Line up to the mind cemetery now
What we don’t know keeps the contracts alive and moving
They don’t have to burn the books – they just remove them
While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells
Rally round the family – pockets full of shells

12-Caban: Deep Rhythm

Born on this day: Anna Gunn, Terry Chimes (The Clash), Steve Guttenberg, Buddy Guy, Antonio Vivaldi, Frank Langella

Deep rhythm

Change goes Global on the 6th Night

The insights I gathered so far during this unique journey of Death and Redundancy are pieces of wisdom, collected while taking classes in the school of life. When put into prose or music lyrics, there is a good chance they will ring a bell on the other side of the globe.

Regardless of my location during the trials of 1-Cimi – be it my spatial location on Earth or my place in this historical moment – the human experiences of transformation, destruction, loss, rebirth, and getting a fresh start do not share my neurotic prejudices; they are part of the Planetary consciousness.

They are the spiritual forces that comprise the good drama scene, the well-written novel, and Buddy Guy.

They are 12-Caban.

13-Edznab: Ethereal Reality

Born on this day: Paco de Lucía, Gene Roddenberry, Heather Small (M People), Fidel Castro, Tim Burton, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Wedding Day

Ethereal Reality

“After a week, I decided religion wasn’t for me.” – Fidel Castro (13-Edznab) from The Atheist’s Bible (2007)

Since Star Trek meant a lot to me during my defining years, I must add some brilliant quotes from the Creator himself, Gene Roddenberry:

“A man either lives life as it happens to him, meets it head-on and licks it, or he turns his back on it and starts to wither away.”
– Gene Roddenberry (13-Edznab) taken from The Cage, Star Trek pilot

I personally link this statement to the importance of facing reality as it happens, moment by moment. The only way to meet life head-on is to give up all illusion, estimation, and theory. The only way to lick it is to fully accept every moment of it, i.e., Loving IT. Turning my back on it and withering away sounds too horrible to consider.

“Star Trek speaks to some basic human needs: that there is a tomorrow — it’s not all going to be over with a big flash and a bomb; that the human race is improving; that we have things to be proud of as humans. No, ancient astronauts did not build the pyramids — human beings built them, because they’re clever and they work hard. And Star Trek is about those things.”
– Gene Roddenberry (13-Edznab)

Seeds of Reflection

The end of this trecena [13-Edznab] calls for the exactitude of the logical and mathematical mind-set. It is a day of calculation – how much have I wisely put away during 1-Imix and the rest of Tzolkin Fall? (Tithing).

Going back to the metaphor I used in 7-Eb (about getting fired), 13-Edznab means finally coming to grips with new reality of change, challenge, and the proverbial Winter. How do I mean?

After achieving a flexible backbone [8-Ben], gaining the Supreme Magician’s measure of patience and macro-vision [9-Ix], obtaining a real vision of what’s to come [10-Men], smoothing the destructive effects of change by the light of our ancestors [11-Cib], and connecting with the deep frequencies of terrestrial life [12-CABAN] – Reality itself [Edznab] seems to finally turn my way. I’m already deep into my next vocation by now. Sacrifice is complete.

When the mirror of reality appears on the 7th Day of creation (13th stage) these lessons are carried over to the next period of true purification [1-Cauac]. This is when reality begins to teach me and learn from me, and I am reminded of the Sudden Death 1-Cimi, the purposeful Road 7-EB, and the Transcending Reflection 13-Edznab.

Okay, but

With Roddenberry’s words in mind, I am reminded of the dual nature of this sun-sign. Reality, in fact, transcends any imagination caged within the words of good prose, or the script of a good TV series. To illustrate what I mean – let’s say I’m terribly addicted to playing computer games. I’ve been into it since I was 6, and I still love doing it every day for some time.

When I lay my head to rest I surrender my spirit to the Planetary consciousness and my body to Mr. Sandman. Then, I travel Dreamland, and when I wake up this journey is bound to affect my day (at least until mid-afternoon or so). This effect can be seen as higher in orders of magnitude when compared to the last time I pitched a no-hitter or clutch 4-bagger on MLB 2012.

Dreams are part of my reality, and so is the video game. But the video game is an imperfect human construct (which even crashes sometimes, especially when I’m ahead).
