8-Ba’atz: Happy new round! (23 August 2018)

“Left of center, wondering about you”

From Kenneth Johnson’s first book “Jaguar Wisdom” I learned that 8-Ba’atz was an important day in the Tzolkin round; considered even to be the round’s “new-year’s day”. Traditionally, it is the day on which new calendar shamans (daykeepers) are to this day initiated, in unique and due ceremony.

Looking at this through my Western eyes (back in 2009), it was immediately odd to have a new cycle begin on the 8th rather than the 1st day. What’s the point of beginning to count from 8?

Ever since then, this question made me examine my concept of time from new angles, and gradually reach a point from which I can look at the Tzolkin (and at Time in general) in completely different ways.

If we take the solar Ha’ab count of days as another example, we’ll find that the ‘seating’ or 1st day of each month occurs on the 20th and last day of any given month. So their months begin with ‘seating’ (zero), then 1, 2, 3… 19, and back to seating again, of the following month.

8-Ba’atz is the round’s initiatory point because, according to this Mayan system of knowledge, it is best to initiate and have ceremony at a point of balance in the 13-day trecena count, rather than at its beginning (1) or end (13). Again, according to Johnson, most all Tzolkin-based Mayan ceremonies take place in days 6-9 of any given trecena – the most balanced days.

The entire Tzolkin round’s balancing point is not found at the absolute midpoint (which is 7, with 6 numbers evenly distributed before and after it), but rather off-center (8), rounded upwards and leaning forward in time, towards the upcoming, on-deck process/trecena.

By another Western count, Imox is considered to be the 1st sun-sign. Here again we find that the sun-sign selected to mark the round’s point of origin is Ba’atz – the 11th sun-sign counting from Imox. So it’s another point of balance that’s rounded up slightly upwards (the absolute midpoint being both Ok and Ba’atz).

The 1-Kat trecena takes place in the 8th uinal (or 20-day count, out of 13) – Another resonance.

According to Apabyan Tew, a Mayan pregnancy shaman, the number eight is known as the point of return, since it’s where you’ll find the sun-sign that ruled the previous trecena. Today’s 8-Ba’atz, and the previous trecena was 1-Ba’atz.

I realized that my fixation with determining first and last is deeply rooted and shared with most of my fellow history-oriented, Judaeo-Christian-Islamic folk.

“Being on deck is the best” – unknown

1-Kat is the best time to celebrate social networking and current social tools, the eternal Facebook included. It’s a time to celebrate each and every way of connecting with another person, regardless of the tools I use.

Naturally, not using any tool and just meeting face to face still seems the best choice. But even if we can’t physically meet, in our current age of connectivity abundance, there are many means of connecting and sharing.

The day of manifestation in this process is 10-Aj (25 August 2018). This is the day on which a clear line is drawn between what’s real and what’s just an opinion; between theory and reality.

Known in the east Indian Vedic tradition as the Web of Indra, the union (or ‘entanglement’) that abides between you and me (Kat) is not something that needs to be achieved or put together slowly over time. It has to be acknowledged as a constant and indestructible reality. No level of technology can finally alienate nor divide us.

And technology, however flawed, distracting, or dangerous, is here to stay. Might as well celebrate it.

Timothy Leary (11-Noj) said to UCLA students in 1968 (I’m paraphrasing) LSD is what evolution has introduced into our mouths at this time to counter the destructive ‘whiskey-drinking, crew-cut, grown-up’ mindset.

So in the same way, the 2012 world-wide Mayan calendar craze gave attention to the Tzolkin, which is still being observed by many people outside Guatemala for over 10 years now. Can’t it be one of Leary’s evolutionary tools, introduced at the right time to creatively rise above otherwise impossible limitations?

My place in Time

The ironies of the universal artistic mind (1-Ba’atz) led me out of the cave of the ego and back to real people and real challenges. These are the challenges that I face when I move from the abstract musings of the artist to the crafty handiwork of the artisan.

Manifestation’s promise of abundance begins to unfold today, 1-Kat, and continues for the next 12 days.

Culture shock

When I take the time to think about it, the Tzolkin can teach me something new every day. This applies to both profound and trivial insights. For example, while editing this post last year, I noticed something new: Star War’s dark side emperor is played by actor Ian McDiarmid (born 8-Ba’atz). His arch-rival, Luke Skywalker, is played by actor Mark Hamill (born the following day: 9-E’).

It makes watching the scenes with both of them all the more interesting.

That is, if you’re as far gone as I am into Star Wars and this ‘calendar’…

How nice it is to get a Road Map the day after the New Year has began!

Yesterday (8-Ba’atz) is considered in the Maya highlands as the most important day of the 260-day Tzolkin cycle, like new year’s day in western solar calendars. Daykeepers are initiated on 8-Ba’atz, and other unique ceremonies take place.

Anyone raised within a western cultural tradition might ask how can a new year begin on an 8th day? A new Gregorian year always begins on the 1st day of January (the first month).

One is a good place to start. Your car’s odometer works that way, too.

However, considering the Mayan view on numbers and math, apart from 1, thirteen can also be a good place to start (being considered zero), as well as another numerical concept called ‘seating’ in the Ha’ab calendar. As an example,  there’s a day in that calendar called ‘seating Pop’, on which the Pop month begins.

All in all, which number you pick as a beginning is not considered as important for the Maya as it does in western traditions. Nor the number where you end, for that matter. It is due to the fundamental difference in how time is viewed between these two points of origin. The former deals with cycles and rhythms; the latter fixates on births and deaths, record-keeping and history.

The Mayan can regard an 8th (or 9th) day as the most important day by virtue of it being a balanced day, between days 1 and 13. Performing rituals on early (1-5) days would yield weak results, while doing so on late and ‘heavy’ (10-13) days could prove overwhelming, and produce distracting side-effects.

To the Mayans, accepting the 1st of January as the beginning and most important day would be under debate. For most people, that solar date is at the height of winter, just after the winter solstice. Shouldn’t the day be celebrated outside? In nature perhaps? When days are much longer?

Why January?

And what’s with December (which means 10th in Latin) being the 12th month? Another worthy matter for discussion at Another Time.

When you view time in cycles, balance becomes important. It is like playing rhythm section (e.g, bass and drums, piano, guitar). It is endless and beginning-less, it just goes on in circles, driving the music, providing background for the harmony and melody.

By a linear model of time there must always be a beginning, otherwise measurement and history is impossible. Human history began at one point, proceeded to stretch from Darwinian sub-human apes, through today’s global social networking hipsters, and onto tomorrow’s Artificial Intelligence defense attorneys. It becomes very important when we began, how we evolved, and how we’re going to die.

Time becomes a tool by which history can be recorded and analysed.

Through this materialistic viewpoint, the Mayan Long count and it’s end date presented a real mystery. Here is a calendar, measuring a 5,000-long cycle of Earth years, abruptly coming to an end. Being impatient as they are, mysteries can only be tolerated if they are quickly resolved, and preferably without disturbing any comfort zones.

It was regarded as a prophecy. It became the day of judgement and the end of time. No one was really interested in what the actual Maya had to say about it, being their own heritage. How typical.

But if Terrence McKenna (3-Tijax) was right, history has already ended. It happened on December 21st, 2012.

5-Qanil: Busy-bunny stud (3 December 2017)

5-Qanil (seed/ripenning) is a day set aside to consider multiplication and its relation to abundance. Multiplication is the empowering force behind community and prosperity.

In the Bible, God commands Adam and Abraham to go forth and multiply like the stars in the heavens. Procreation multiplies souls on earth.

God further decrees that bread is to be won by the sweat of thy brow. Husbandry and agriculture multiply fruits, seeds, and livestock. Industry and commerce multiply just about everything else.

All these empower me, my family, and my neighbors. They are the keystones of prosperity.

Lamat is Yucatec for “Rabbit”. The one animal known for its abilities to multiply. ‘Nuff said.

SYMBOLOGY

What’s called for right now is a precise star (5-Qanil). ‘Star’ is another meaning related to this day of Qanil/Lamat.

When I’m out in the desert at night, looking for good shelter, all I need is 1 precise star. A single star from the multitude, which I’ll recognize immediately and navigate according to it to the nearest Oasis. It’s just a small star (5th stage star, not yet 6 or 7), but it pinpoints my location and maps the way to more abundance on this southern, sunny, and altogether grounded trecena.

Culture shock

In 1997 Hollywood director Paul Thomas Anderson (7-Imox genius-wacko) came out with the movie ‘Boogie nights”, retelling a thinly-veiled biography of porn-film infamy John Holmes (5-Qanil). It was a tale of meteor rising, followed closely by a spectacular crash and burn. A tale of lust and indulgences whose end was known well in advance. But the party went on as long as it lasted, and not all transformations were bad.

This is typical Qanil syombolism: the god of the vine, ever looking for a new high, insatiable when it comes to indulgences and getting lost in substance. It is Qanil as Lamat the sensual rabbit.

Although being just a wee rabbit, another aspect of the same spirited principal is one of bravery, leadership, maturity, deep wisdom and appreciation of every form of abundance. The stoned god, the father of many, is also the one who rushes first to battle, laughing hard enough to make any foe turn and run like hell.

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘Silmarilion’ it is the Valar (deity) called Tulkas.

In Flash Gordon it is Brian Blessed (5-Qanil) as Prince Voltan.
